Beneath this stone
Beneath this stone and crust of earth
a gentle spirit lies,
who lost his youth in action fierce,
midst screaming battle cries.
One had to lift a lock of hair
to see the tiny wound.
His childlike face . . a face so fair,
now rests within this tomb.
Now should you chance to be here
when the stars are heading home. . .
when the sky begins to lighten. . .
and the dew’s upon the stone,
Breathe gently then, and listen
for the sounds that still are here. . .
and the rumble of the muskets
will beat soft upon your ear.
